Kristina and Toon by Christian Lee Photography in Ontario, Canada

PHOTOGRAPHER: Christian Lee of Christian Lee Photography in Ottawa, Ont.

VENUE: Sala San Marco, Ottawa, Ont.

HOURS AT WEDDING: 14

CHALLENGES: Christian: “Kristina and Toon are both professional volleyball players (Toon currently plays for Team Canada), so an interesting challenge to this wedding was everyone’s height. I’m not a short person (6’0″), but I felt tiny compared to everyone there. I think the average guest height was 6’3″…and that includes the ladies!”

POSITIVES: Christian: “This was a massively fun wedding from start to finish. Kristina and Toon are fun, energetic people, and are very expressive, which makes a photographer’s job much easier.”

Rachel and Chris by Woodnote Photography in Delafield, WI

PHOTOGRAPHERS: Caroline and Jayden of Woodnote Photography in Milwaukee, WI

VENUE: St. John’s Military Academy, Delafield, WI

HOURS AT WEDDING: 12

CHALLENGES: Caroline: “A wedding in Wisconsin in April means you’re dealing with a lot of trees that haven’t gotten their new leaves yet, and dead fields of grass that are recovering from a long winter of being buried under snow. Despite the challenges of brown locations to shoot in, Rachel + Chris were so relaxed and let us scout to find some spots that we could make look much more “alive” than most of the state looked at the time.”

POSITIVES: Caroline: “Rachel + Chris come from huge families who absolutely adore them both. It was amazing to experience the joy of almost 400 people in one room celebrating the love of their dear friends! I’m not sure if we’d ever photographed such a huge group before, but the energy was just the best!”

Nick and Lindsey by Laura Wills Photography in Des Moines, IA

PHOTOGRAPHER: Laura Wills of Laura Wills Photography in Des Moines, IA

VENUE: Sticks, Des Moines, IA

HOURS AT WEDDING: 12

CHALLENGES: Laura: “The most difficult part of this wedding was that the groom is my brother. It’s a challenge in and of itself to photograph family members; but to be put in charge of documenting their wedding is definitely nerve-wracking. The other challenge was the lighting during their ceremony. I have photographed ceremonies in several churches and lighting conditions, but it is notoriously challenging here. There is good, direct light in the middle of the altar, but right where the bride and groom sit throughout the service is exactly where the light falls away and it becomes extremely dark.”

POSITIVES: Laura: “Having the groom for my brother also was the best part of shooting. Because they know me so well, they trusted me 100% in regards to their timeline, locations, and posing (or lack thereof). My brother is extremely humorous and sarcastic, so knowing how he would respond to the camera was so helpful and because I know him and his bride so well, it was very natural to work with them. It was a fun day with a very laid back couple; which always makes my job a bit easier!”

Maryam and Ehsan by Khanh Nguyen Photography in Houston, TX

PHOTOGRAPHER: Khanh Nguyen of Khanh Nguyen Photography in Houston, TX

VENUE: Rice University, Houston, TX

HOURS AT WEDDING: 9

CHALLENGES: Khanh: “I had never shot an Iranian wedding ceremony before so the cultural ceremony was new to me. The ceremony location took place at their home so the space we had to work with was limited.”

POSITIVES: Khanh: “My favorite part was when they do their traditional first dance that involved everybody at the wedding.”

Annie and Afsheen by Cadence and Eli Photography in Minneapolis, MN

PHOTOGRAPHERS: Cadence and Eli Cornelius of Cadence and Eli Photography in Minneapolis, MN

VENUE: Silverwood Park & Preserve, Minneapolis, MN

HOURS AT WEDDING: 14

CHALLENGES: Cadence: “It was a late spring in Minnesota after a long, harsh winter which meant that trees were still leafless and portraits were in the early afternoon with a high sun which proved slightly challenging.”

POSITIVES: Cadence: “We knew Annie & Afsheen wanted a lot of candid moments captured throughout the day, especially on the dance floor which is absolutely one of our favorite things to photograph.”

Ryan and Ainsley by Joseph West Photography in Atlanta, GA

PHOTOGRAPHERS: Joseph West of Joseph West Photography in Houston, TX.

VENUE: The Georgian Club, Atlanta, GA

HOURS AT WEDDING: 12

CHALLENGES: Joseph: “The only true challenges I can think of is that Ryan is a cousin of an amazing photographer who i look up to; Joe Cogliandro. He actually asked me to shoot the wedding which was a huge honor but a ton of pressure.”

POSITIVES: Joseph: “The positive is that both the client and Joe were thrilled with the results!”

Van and Ian by Firm Anchor Photography in Louisville, KY

PHOTOGRAPHERS: Ashley and Ben Willis of Firm Anchor Photography in Louisville, KY.

VENUE: River Valley Club, Louisville, KY

HOURS AT WEDDING: 8

CHALLENGES: None worth mentioning.

POSITIVES: Ashley: “These guys were such an awesome couple to work with. We shoot totally differently from a lot of photographers. We focus on emotion and shoot very organically. We play games with them, make them laugh, get emotional with them, make them cry. It takes a special couple to just relax and trust our vision and how we do things. Van + Ian did just that. They trusted us, and that’s all it takes to make a wedding awesome in our minds.”

Sara and Ayron by Lyn Ismael Photography in Ontario, Canada

PHOTOGRAPHER: Lyn Ismael-Bennett of Lyn Ismael Photography in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

VENUE: Hampton Barn in Belwood Lake Conservation Area, Belwood, Ontario

HOURS AT WEDDING: 12

CHALLENGES: Lyn: “The indoor venue was tight and need to remember to bring bug spray when shooting at conservation areas” due to the mosquitoes.

POSITIVES: Lyn: “Laid back wedding, bride and groom and their wedding party were relaxed the entire time, the ceremony and reception were in the same venue, the first look allowed the bride and groom to spend more time with their guests after formals were done, and gorgeous natural scenery.”

Tanner and Angela by Gillespie Photography in Brookings, SD

PHOTOGRAPHER: Trent Gillespie of Gillespie Photography in Denver, CO.

VENUE: Private Residence, Brookings, SD

HOURS AT WEDDING: 8

CHALLENGES: Trent: “Arriving for bridal prep photos, we stepped outside of our car and were just about blown over. The wind had to be gusting around 30 to 40 mph. Hoping that it would subside, we shot prep, and then the men… but it didn’t let up. We did what we could inside, but it was only so much. After Tanner & Angela said their vows, we walked outside to no wind… so we quickly raced to the reception venue (parents house) and managed to grab some absolutely awesome light. The bugs were out in full force and the humidity had to be near 100%, but we stuck it out and managed to make some beautiful photos.”

POSITIVES: Trent: “The wind, while a pain early in the day, gave us a timeline that afforded for that beautiful evening glow photos.”

Abby and Steve by Jerry Yoon Photography in San Francisco, CA

PHOTOGRAPHERS: Ingrid Chang and Jerry Yoon of Jerry Yoon Photography in Oakland, CA

VENUE: City Hall, San Francisco, CA

HOURS AT WEDDING: 8

CHALLENGES: Ingrid: “We were running pretty late because getting ready took longer than expected. We had to squeeze portraits in whenever we could and cut out some spots we wanted to visit. It ended up fine because they were so relaxed.”

POSITIVES: Ingrid: “Abby and Steve are easy going, down for anything, and so much fun so we really enjoyed working with them. We also love shooting at City Hall because of its nooks and crannies. There’s also a ton of different light to work with. The couple and their friends also loved dancing, so that’s always fun to shoot.”
