Grace and David by Nathan Mitchell Photography in Lexington, VA

PHOTOGRAPHER: Nathan Mitchell of Nathan Mitchell Photography.

VENUE: Big Spring Farm.

STYLE:An all-around photographer, Nathan is part photojournalist, capturing “the real emotion and real feel of the day” and part portrait photographer, controlling “lighting and composition”.

CHALLENGES: From the photographer: “The challenge for me was shooting in a brand new venue that had only had one or two weddings there, so I was excited to see what we could do with the space. Knowing that in a way I was setting the tone for future wedding photography at that venue was definitely some added pressure. Also it was really buggy that day!”

POSITIVES: The couple gave Nathan full freedom for portraits in beautiful light. The forecast called for rain but held off until after the wedding when Nathan joined the bridal party as they “chowed down on post-wedding victory waffles.”

Yalin and Boshi by Anderton Photography in Ithaca, NY

PHOTOGRAPHER: Jeff Anderton of Anderton Photography.

VENUE: Cornell University.

STYLE: Jeff describes his style as natural and responsive to the couple he’s working with at the time, telling subjects that “the sooner you ignore me, the better your photos will be.”

CHALLENGES: From the photographer: “The couple contacted me 7 weeks prior to the wedding date. The couple, living in China, would be arriving exactly 26 hours before the wedding. Therefore, the weekly Skype session would be our deepest form of interaction.” To overcome it Jeff spent the first several hours with the couple on the day of the wedding just walking around and getting to know them without firing a shot.

POSITIVES: Jeff got rare unlimited access to Cornell University’s facilities and grounds and made the most of the opportunity.

Daisy and Glenn by Ricky Stern Photography, Miami, FL

PHOTOGRAPHER: Ricky Stern of Ricky Stern Photography in Miami, FL.

VENUE: Getting Ready – The Loft in Doral, FL and the rest at The Zen House in Miami.

STYLE: Ricky’s style is bold, modern and fun.

CHALLENGES: From the photographer: “I faced multiple challenges at this wedding, but most pressing was the complete lack of light at the open air night reception and the abnormal reception space (including a large pool behind the dancing area). Plus, it rained on and off, so I was running back and forth from cover with my two light stands as the rain kept turning on and off, on and off. I was very happy to see I managed to get enough light on everyone dancing, I was genuinely worried for most of the night.”

POSITIVES: “I loved the bride and groom. It’s very rare to find a couple this energetic and committed to great photos and they didn’t disappoint me once. It was not an easy wedding with the conditions but I was determined to do the best job possible because they were so great to work with. Plus, they had huge blobby light features!”
